For the first eighteen years of my coaching career, I genuinely believed I understood how people learned to play tennis.
Like many coaches, I followed a very traditional approach. If a player wanted to improve their forehand, I would demonstrate the movement, explain the technique, isolate the shot and ask them to repeat it over and over again. The assumption was simple: if a player could perform the movement consistently in practice, they would eventually perform it consistently in competition.
It made sense.
Or at least I thought it did.
Then one player changed everything I believed about coaching.
In 2018, I was preparing a talented junior for a national tournament. We spent six weeks working almost exclusively on his serve. We isolated the movement, made technical adjustments, completed thousands of repetitions and, by the end of the block, the serve looked fantastic. If another coach had walked past our court, they would probably have congratulated us on the progress we had made.
Then we arrived at the tournament.
The player couldn’t serve.
Double fault followed double fault. The confidence disappeared almost immediately and everything we had apparently learned over six weeks simply fell apart under the pressure of competition.
Driving home afterwards, I kept asking myself one question.
If a player can perform a skill in practice but not in competition, have they actually learned the skill?
That question sent me down a rabbit hole that completely changed how I viewed coaching, learning and skill development. It eventually led me to a theory called ecological dynamics.
So, What Are Ecological Dynamics?
Ecological dynamics is an academic framework that attempts to explain how humans develop sport-specific skills. It combines ideas from ecological psychology, which explores how people interact with their environment, and dynamical systems theory, which examines how human movement emerges through the interaction of the individual, the task and the environment.
Although the terminology can sound intimidating, the central idea is surprisingly simple.
People do not become skilful by memorising movements.
They become skilful by solving problems.
Every sporting movement emerges because the athlete is trying to achieve something within a constantly changing environment. In tennis, every ball arrives at a different speed, height and spin. Every opponent presents different problems. Every point unfolds differently. The environment is constantly changing, so the movement has to change with it.
Rather than asking, “How do I teach the perfect forehand?”, ecological dynamics asks a different question.
How do I create an environment where players can discover effective movement solutions for themselves?
That single shift in thinking changed everything about my coaching.
Why I Had to Rethink My Coaching
Looking back, I don’t think I was a bad coach.
I simply believed what most coaches believed.
I believed good coaching meant having the answers. I believed parents expected me to be the authority figure. I believed technique came first and performance came second.
The tournament with that young player exposed the biggest weakness in my coaching.
The technique looked excellent in practice, but it didn’t transfer into competition.
Instead of asking how I could explain the serve better, I started asking whether I really understood how humans learn at all.
That led me to study ecological psychology, skill acquisition and ecological dynamics. It also made me realise something that now seems obvious.
Every day I walk onto a tennis court, I don’t coach forehands.
I coach human beings.
If my job is to help humans develop sporting skill, surely understanding human learning should be just as important as understanding tennis itself.
The Biggest Misconceptions About Ecological Dynamics
One of the biggest misunderstandings is that ecological dynamics means coaches don’t coach anymore.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
An ecological coach still coaches, but they coach differently.
Rather than constantly telling players what to do, when to do it and how to do it, they manipulate the environment to encourage different behaviours. They change the court size, the scoring system, the targets, the task or the rules of the game so players begin discovering better solutions themselves.
From the outside, it often looks like players are “just playing games.”
From the coach’s perspective, every decision is intentional.
Another misconception is that ecological dynamics ignores technique.
Again, this simply isn’t true.
Movement matters enormously.
What ecological dynamics questions is whether there is one perfect movement that every player should copy.
For me, the better question is whether the movement is effective and efficient.
If it is, why change it?
Professional tennis gives us plenty of examples. Daniil Medvedev’s forehand has often been criticised for looking unconventional. Frances Tiafoe has received similar comments throughout his career. Neither player receives points because their technique looks pretty. They receive points because their movement helps them solve the problems tennis presents.
Tennis is not an aesthetic competition.
It is a problem-solving sport.
How My Coaching Changed
The first thing I changed wasn’t my feedback.
It was the environment.
Initially, I misunderstood ecological dynamics. I started using constraints to try and force players into producing the movements I wanted. Looking back, I had simply replaced direct instruction with indirect instruction.
As my understanding developed, I realised constraints are not there to create specific movements.
They are there to shape behaviour.
For example, if I want players to hit the ball deeper, I don’t tell them to finish over their shoulder anymore. I simply create an environment where hitting deeper becomes the most successful solution. I might lengthen the court or reward deeper targets through the scoring system.
The environment begins guiding behaviour.
The movement follows.
This is a subtle difference, but an incredibly important one.
Watching My Son Changed My Thinking
One of the biggest lessons about ecological dynamics didn’t come from reading research papers.
It came from watching my two-year-old son grow up.
Nobody taught him how to roll over.
Nobody demonstrated how to crawl.
Nobody corrected his walking technique.
He simply interacted with the world around him. Every day he explored new possibilities. Sometimes he fell over. Sometimes he found better solutions. As his body became stronger, he unlocked new movement opportunities.
Watching that process made me realise how naturally humans learn through interaction.
The question then became:
Why should sport be any different?
Does Ecological Dynamics Actually Work?
This is probably the question I get asked most often.
My honest answer is that I can’t prove ecological dynamics works simply because a player becomes world number one. Equally, nobody can prove traditional coaching works because someone wins Wimbledon.
Elite performance is influenced by countless factors.
What I can say is what I observe.
Players become more confident.
Players become more independent.
Players solve problems without constantly looking towards me.
Players enjoy sessions more.
Perhaps most importantly, they keep coming back.
I’ve also changed.
Traditional coaching placed enormous pressure on me to have every answer. Every mistake felt like my responsibility. Coaching became stressful.
Today, I enjoy coaching far more.
Every session is different because every group interacts differently with the environment. Players regularly surprise me with solutions I never expected. Coaching has become more creative, more enjoyable and far less about controlling every movement.
Alongside these observations sits a growing body of academic research exploring ecological psychology, representative learning design, constraints-led coaching and skill acquisition across many different sports.
The One Question Every Coach Should Ask
If ecological dynamics has taught me one practical lesson, it is this.
Whenever you design a practice, ask yourself:
Does this look and feel like the game?
Does the player perceive the same information they will encounter in competition?
Do they have to make similar decisions?
Are they solving genuine sporting problems?
The further practice moves away from the reality of competition, the less confident I become that meaningful skill will transfer.
Final Thoughts
The biggest change ecological dynamics brought to my coaching wasn’t that I stopped teaching technique or stopped giving feedback.
The biggest change was that I stopped studying tennis and started studying human learning.
As sports coaches, we work with humans. If we want to help people become more skilful, we have to understand how people learn, adapt and interact with the world around them. Yes, the academic language can be daunting, but beneath the jargon lies a remarkably practical idea.
Create environments where players can interact, explore, solve problems and make decisions.
When that happens, players don’t just become more skilful.
They become more confident, more adaptable and, perhaps most importantly, they enjoy the game far more.
For me, that’s what ecological dynamics is really about.
