For decades, tennis coaching has largely been built around a simple assumption: players improve through repetition. Hit more forehands. Feed more balls. Repeat the same movement patterns often enough and eventually the technique becomes “grooved.” Across clubs and academies worldwide, basket feeding, repetitive rally drills, and isolated technical exercises dominate practice environments. Coaches frequently search for the perfect drill, the perfect progression, or the perfect technical model that will finally unlock player improvement.
But the reality of tennis tells a very different story.
In a recent conversation with coach and content creator Jeff Webb / Turn Sideways Project, we explored one of the biggest misconceptions in modern tennis coaching: players do not necessarily need more drills. In many cases, they simply need more opportunities to actually play the game.
That sounds obvious on the surface, yet it fundamentally challenges many of the assumptions underpinning traditional coaching culture. Because somewhere along the way, tennis practice became disconnected from the reality of tennis itself.
One of the strongest themes throughout the conversation was the importance of free play and multi-sport experiences during childhood. Both Jeff and I reflected on growing up in environments where learning occurred largely through play, competition, experimentation, and adaptation rather than formal technical instruction.
We played football matches. Basketball games. Tennis points. Boxing contests. We competed constantly, often against older children, stronger opponents, and unpredictable situations. Losing was normal. Adapting was necessary. Nobody stopped games every thirty seconds to explain body positioning or demonstrate ideal movement mechanics. Instead, the environment itself provided feedback.
That matters because free play naturally exposes children to the core ingredient of skill development: adaptation. Children reorganise movement solutions in response to changing problems. They adjust to opponents, spaces, pressure, fatigue, and consequences. The game itself becomes the teacher.
Modern coaching environments often interrupt that process far too quickly.
Adults intervene.
Corrections arrive instantly.
Practices become over-structured.
Movement becomes prescribed rather than explored.
As a result, players can become highly dependent on instruction while struggling to adapt independently under real competitive pressure.
One of the biggest problems within traditional tennis coaching is that many practice environments barely resemble the game itself. Players spend huge amounts of time engaging in cooperative rallying patterns, repetitive basket drills, or highly predictable movement exercises that remove uncertainty almost entirely. Yet tennis is fundamentally unpredictable. Every point changes depending on the score, the opponent, the emotional state of the player, the weather, fatigue, court positioning, and countless other interacting factors.
As Jeff described during the conversation, tennis may actually be one of the most inconsistent sports in the world. No two points are identical. No movement is ever reproduced in exactly the same way. Even at the highest levels, the game constantly changes from moment to moment.
Yet paradoxically, many coaches continue trying to build consistency through environments built on artificial stability and repetition.
This becomes even more problematic when we consider another major myth in tennis coaching: the idea that tennis is primarily a game of consistency. Players are constantly told to “just keep the ball in play” or “be more consistent.” But performance analysis research consistently shows that most points in tennis are actually very short. The serve, return, and first attacking opportunity often determine the outcome long before extended neutral rallies emerge.
Tennis is not primarily about endless cooperative rallying.
It is a competitive problem-solving activity built around disruption, pressure, and adaptation.
Yet many practice environments train players for a version of tennis that rarely exists in actual matches.
This disconnect between practice and performance became particularly clear during one story I shared in the conversation involving a group of under-8 players. On the final week of term, rather than delivering a structured session, we simply placed all the equipment on court and told the children to do whatever they wanted for ninety minutes.
Most adults would probably expect chaos.
But something fascinating happened.
Every child started organising tennis matches.
They served.
Returned.
Kept score.
Changed rules.
Adjusted spaces.
Modified constraints.
And perhaps most interestingly, they naturally manipulated the environment to maintain challenge and enjoyment. If one player started dominating too heavily, the children immediately changed the conditions to make the game more competitive again.
Nobody requested repetitive forehand drills.
Nobody asked for basket feeding.
Nobody wanted isolated technical work.
They simply wanted to play tennis.
That observation says a great deal about how humans naturally learn through interaction with games and environments. Children do not need to be convinced that competition is engaging. They do not need adults to artificially create motivation. The game itself already contains those affordances when the environment allows them to emerge.
One of the most revealing moments in the conversation came when Jeff described working with an adult player who repeatedly resisted playing actual points or sets during lessons. The player preferred controlled technical practice and repetitive exercises. Match play created anxiety because it exposed uncertainty, imperfection, and unpredictability.
Eventually, Jeff convinced him to play a set.
Within just a few games, the player immediately realised something important: the game itself felt completely different from the drills he had been rehearsing. The emotions changed. The decisions changed. The timing changed. The behaviours changed. The realities of tennis only truly emerged once the player was placed inside the actual performance environment.
This reflects one of the biggest limitations of many traditional practice structures. Players often become highly adapted to the drill rather than becoming adaptable performers within the game itself.
Ecological dynamics offers a fundamentally different way of viewing this problem. Rather than seeing skill as the reproduction of ideal techniques or stored motor patterns, ecological approaches view skill as adaptive behaviour emerging through interaction between the player and the environment. Learning is not simply something delivered by the coach through instruction. It emerges through exploration, perception, and adaptation within representative situations.
This changes the role of the coach dramatically.
The coach becomes less of a movement corrector and more of an environment designer.
Rather than constantly prescribing technical positions and biomechanical checkpoints, the coach begins shaping constraints, manipulating information, guiding intention and attention, and creating representative learning environments that invite useful behaviours to emerge.
Importantly, this does not mean biomechanics becomes irrelevant or that coaches should become passive. The issue is not whether movement matters. Of course movement matters. The issue is whether isolated technical instruction alone can fully explain how humans learn to perform under the constantly changing conditions of sport.
Both Jeff and I admitted during the conversation that we were once heavily drawn toward biomechanics because it appeared scientific, measurable, and authoritative. We invested in video analysis systems, technical models, and movement comparisons because that was what serious coaching was expected to look like.
But eventually we both encountered the same uncomfortable reality: players often looked far better inside controlled technical environments than they did in actual competitive situations.
This is where many coaches become trapped.
Biomechanics offers certainty. It provides clear positions, models, and explanations. It allows coaches to feel knowledgeable and players to feel like progress is occurring. But the danger is that technical perfection inside isolated environments can create the illusion of learning without necessarily improving adaptability under pressure.
As our conversation repeatedly returned to, the deeper issue may not actually be about drills versus no drills. The real issue is whether the environment represents the game closely enough for meaningful learning to emerge.
That requires coaches to ask far better questions.
What information is the player interacting with?
Does this activity represent the real game?
What behaviours are emerging?
What problems is the player solving?
Is the player becoming more adaptable?
Is the environment encouraging exploration and perception?
Those questions move coaching away from simply delivering exercises and toward understanding learning itself.
And perhaps that is one of the biggest shifts tennis coaching still needs to make.
Because ultimately, players do not improve simply because they hit thousands of balls. They improve because they learn to adapt to the ever-changing demands of competition. Real learning occurs when players interact with pressure, uncertainty, opponents, opportunities, and constantly evolving situations.
This does not mean all drills are automatically bad. But when practice becomes disconnected from the realities of the game, players can become highly skilled at performing drills while struggling to perform in matches.
Perhaps the future of tennis coaching is not about finding better drills.
Perhaps it is about helping players spend more time truly playing the game.
