Recently, a parent shared a message from a coach after a one-off session.
It was framed as a player report — a list of technical faults, grip comments, and prescriptive opinions about what the child “should” do.
The feedback included classic examples:
- “The ready position is too low.”
- “The grip has changed but needs correcting.”
- “The serve is weak because the ball toss is wrong.”
- “The contact point is incorrect.”
On the surface, this may look like “good coaching.”
In reality, it’s exactly the kind of intervention that slows learning, creates confusion, and disrupts natural skill development — and academic evidence strongly supports this.
This style of coaching comes from a technical, coach-centred, information-processing tradition that modern sports science has repeatedly shown to be flawed.
Let’s break down exactly why this approach is ineffective — and why it can do more harm than good.
1. Technical Fault Lists Ignore How Skill Actually Develops
Skill does not come from copying “correct” shapes or positions.
It emerges through the athlete’s interactions with the environment (Davids et al., 2008; Renshaw et al., 2019).
A child’s grip, stance, and posture will naturally fluctuate depending on:
- ball speed
- ball height
- time pressure
- opponent behaviour
- movement demands
- intentions
So when a coach declares:
“The ready position is too low and blocks the forehand swing.”
…they are assuming a single correct movement pattern — an idea refuted by 30+ years of ecological dynamics research(Chow et al., 2022; Bernstein, 1967).
Players don’t need to memorise shapes. They need to learn how to adapt.
Technical “corrections” too early:
- reduce exploration
- restrict movement creativity
- produce robotic, fragile performance under pressure
- collapse when the environment changes
Coaching lists of faults is outdated and ineffective.
2. One-Off Technical Judgements Are Meaningless Without Context
A coach observing a child for 45–60 minutes cannot meaningfully conclude:
- “the serve is weak”
- “the toss is wrong”
- “the contact point is incorrect”
Why?
Because isolated technical observations ignore the environment that produces the movement (Jacobs & Michaels, 2007).
A toss that appears “too low” might be the result of:
- not enough spacing
- uncertainty of intention
- fear of missing
- poor time-pressure regulation
- variability natural to early learning
The ecological view is clear:
Movement cannot be evaluated outside of the context that gives rise to it.
(Araújo & Davids, 2016)
The moment we remove that context — which is exactly what technical checklists do — the learning process breaks down.
3. Coach-Led Opinions Create Dependence, Not Skill
The message ended with:
“This is my opinion — but they should explain it to you and see your opinion.”
This highlights the biggest issue of all.
Tennis has become a sport of competing opinions, not coherent learning frameworks.
Children become reliant on:
- what one coach says on Monday
- what another coach says on Wednesday
- what a parent says at the weekend
This leads to confusion, paralysis, and overthinking — the opposite of skilled behaviour.
Ecological studies on expertise show that high-level performers:
- rely less on internal instructions
- rely more on perceiving affordances
- self-organise movement solutions
- adapt based on task demands, not verbal cues(Otte et al., 2020; Seifert et al., 2019)
A player who constantly waits for a coach’s correction will never learn to self-regulate.
4. The “Fault-Fixing” Model Has Been Debunked Across Sport
Research across football, rugby, golf, climbing, basketball, and tennis all show the same pattern:
Athletes improve faster when coaches shape environments, not movements.
(Correia et al., 2019; Button et al., 2022)
Traditional coaches who talk about:
- grip
- swings
- readiness positions
- “correct” contact point
…are using a 1970s biomechanical model of motor learning.
Modern coaching (ecological dynamics) teaches us:
- Technique is functional, not aesthetic
- Variability is a feature, not a flaw
- Coordination stabilises through task interaction, not repetition
- Perception and action cannot be separated
- Movement must adapt to opponents, space, time, and intention
A child does not need “higher ready position.”
They need better information and more representative practice.
5. These Reports Do More Harm Than Good
This type of coaching produces:
- players who fear making mistakes
- players who obsess over “doing it right”
- players who freeze under pressure
- players who cannot adapt to different opponents
- players who depend on adult instruction
- players who look great in drills but collapse in matches
Worse still — it erodes confidence.
Children start to believe things are “wrong” with their game, instead of recognising that variability is part of becoming skilled.
Skill develops through exploration, not correction.
What Effective Coaching Looks Like Instead
A modern, evidence-based player report would focus on:
- decision-making
- ability to perceive opportunities
- spacing and positioning
- intention (attack, defend, neutral)
- adaptability to different ball flights
- competitive behaviours
- problem-solving
- engagement and enjoyment
Not:
- grips
- ready positions
- contact points
Those are consequences of good perception, not the cause.
The coach should design environments that help the player attune to:
- ball flight information
- opponent movement
- court space
- timing and spacing challenges
This develops functional, adaptable technique naturally.
Final Thought: It’s Time to Move Tennis Beyond Opinions
Coaching cannot continue being:
“This is my opinion — tell me yours.”
It must be grounded in:
- research
- learning theory
- ecological dynamics
- representative design
- child development
- evidence, not anecdotes
Children deserve learning environments that help them grow — not technical labels that limit them.
