My Practice Designs

Serve, Position, and Hold

Objective:

Enhance players’ serve precision, rally tactics, and positional awareness, focusing on maintaining optimal court positioning for both offensive and defensive play.

Setup:

Players: 2 (Server and Returner)

Equipment: Tennis balls, rackets.

  • Court: Standard tennis court.

Serve and Controlled Rally:

  • The server starts the drill with a serve.
  • A controlled rally ensues, limited to a maximum of four shots.

Catch and Fixed Serve:

  • After the fourth shot, the server must catch the ball and serve again from their current position, without moving their feet.
  • This element adds a strategic layer, as the server must consider their court position throughout the rally.

Winning Points:

  • Points can be won by either player at any time before the catch, including off the serve or during the rally.
  • If the server fails to catch the ball, the returner scores a point.

Strategic Shot Making:

  • Players must think tactically about their shot placement, aiming to gain an advantage within the four-shot limit.
  • The server needs to balance aggressive play with the necessity of a favourable position for the next serve.

Role Rotation:

Players switch roles after a set number of serves, ensuring both practice as server and returner.

Task Constraints:

  • The server is challenged to maintain effective court positioning for both the rally and the subsequent serve.
  • Individual Constraints: Players need to adapt their play style and shot selection to maximize their advantage within the rally constraints.

Coaching Tips:

  • Guide the server on effective serve placement to set up advantageous rally positions.
  • Stress the importance of strategic movement and anticipation for both players.
  • Offer feedback on how players manage their court position in preparation for the catch and subsequent serve.

Variations:

  • Vary the number of shots in the rally to adjust the difficulty level.
  • Introduce specific shot types or patterns to challenge players’ adaptability.

Reflection:

Post-drill, engage in a discussion about the challenges of maintaining position, the effectiveness of shot selection, and the tactical aspects of the drill.
